The aim of the charity Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) is to provide Accident and Emergency Departments throughout the country with cuddly teddy bears, for the staff to freely distribute to children is distress when they arrive at hospital. This simple idea was started by Freemasons in Essex during 2001 and has now been rolled out over the majority of the UK. It is also becoming a global enterprise as it has now being adopted into America, Australia, South Africa, Cyprus, Malta, Spain and Gibraltar. Due to the regional nature of Freemasonry, each province has taken on the responsibility for administering TLC at a local level. Teddies for Loving Care was adopted in Surrey in March 2005 and to date, TLC Appeal Surrey has distributed over 80,000 teddy bears to A&E Units in the area. There are 6 different coloured teddy bears of a unique design, only available through the charity. Each teddy carries a tag "Donated by Local Freemasons", which provides continuous evidence of the principles of Freemasonry in practice in the community. The bear is CE marked and has been approved by all of the Health Authorities. In Surrey we are leading the way by individually packing bears, to deal with the modern requirements of the hospital environment.
TLC is funded by the generosity of local Freemasons, the sale of merchandise and the sponsorship of local business and personal donations.
